Alpina’s presence in Britain began in summer 1981, when Frank and Alan Sytner met founder Burkard Bovensiepen in Munich and secured the rights for Sytner Nottingham to become Alpina’s sole UK importer and the only site outside Buchloe authorised to carry out BMW to Alpina conversions. Due to type approval restrictions at the time, cars couldn’t be imported fully built from Germany, so Sytner developed the expertise to convert them in house with impressive efficiency. While the flagship 3.5-litre, 245bhp B9 (based on the BMW E28 528i) was still in development, Sytner tested the market by converting new 528is into the B2.8. These cars featured 16-inch Alpina wheels, front and rear spoilers, upgraded suspension, a bespoke steering wheel, optional stripe kit, Alpina badging, and a B9 exhaust system that increased power from 184bhp to 192bhp. Around 20 were produced, with fewer than 10 believed to survive today.
