The Ferrari 250 is a series of sports cars and grand tourers built by Ferrari from 1952 to 1964. The company's most successful early line, the 250 series includes many variants designed for road use or sports car racing. 250 series cars are characterized by their use of a 3.0 L (2,953 cc) Colombo V12 engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo. The 250 series designation refers to this engine's cylinder displacement of approximately 250 cc.

One of the most notable GT racers of its time, the 1959 250 GT Berlinetta SWB used a short (2,400 mm (94.5 in)) wheelbase for better handling. Of the 176 examples built, both steel and aluminium bodies were used in various road ("lusso") and racing trims. Engine output ranged from 237 hp to 276 hp.

Development of the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta was handled by Giotto Bizzarrini, Carlo Chiti, and young Mauro Forghieri, the same team that later produced the 250 GTO. Disc brakes were a first on a Ferrari GT, and the combination of low weight, high power, and well-sorted suspension made it competitive. It was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October and quickly began selling and racing. The SWB Berlinetta won Ferrari the GT class of the 1961 Constructor's Championship. Also won 1960, 1961 and 1962 Tour de France Automobile before giving ground to the GTO's.

FERRARI 250 SWB – A UNIQUE ‘NEW’ CAR

Completed in 2018-2019 on behalf of Vern Schuppan, former international racing car driver and Le Mans winner.  Christos Vlahos, former commercial director of Ferrari’s ‘Certificazioni Classiche’ department and director of Ferrari Museo Maranello, sourced a suitable 250 GTE donor car and negotiated a deal with Franco Bacchelli’s Carrozzeria Autosport which later became Bacchelli & Villa to manufacture a new lightweight steel bodied Ferrari 250 SWB car. This was the same team that carried out the Steve McQueen 275 GTB/4 restoration on behalf of V. Schuppan.

A genuine Ferrari SWB competition-spec V12 with Weber carburettors, paired to an original Ferrari four-speed competition gearbox and high-ratio 8.35 differential was sourced by Vlahos and Bacchelli. Modena-based engine specialist, Giuseppe Garuti, assembled and installed the engine and mechanicals.

Every component has been manufactured or restored to period-correct specification. Lightweight thin-gauge steel bodywork not only mirrors the look and authenticity of the original competition SWBs, but also delivers a driving and handling experience that Vern Schuppan himself regards as among the finest of any SWB Ferrari he has driven—whether on road or track.

We believe this is a rare opportunity to acquire this car. Its impeccable construction, authentic components, and direct connection to a former Le Mans winner add further provenance and investment appeal.

Documentation for the build (including direct Ferrari factory correspondence), along with an extensive photographic record, is available to interested parties.
