In 1978, Porsche introduced the new version of the 911, called the '911SC'. Porsche reintroduced the SC designation for the first time since the 356SC (as distinguished from the race engined 356 Carrera). There was no Carrera version of the 911SC. According to modern-day Porsche literature and websites (there is no period reference to SC meaning anything) the "SC" stands for "Super Carrera". It featured a 3.0-litre aluminium engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a 5-speed 915 transmission. Originally power output was 178 hp, later 188 hp and then in 1981 it was increased to 201 hp. The move to an aluminium engine was to regain case reliability, something missing for many years with magnesium. In 1981 a Cabriolet concept car was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The clever Sportomatic transmission was ahead of its time and allows clutchless gear changes with a conventional manual gearbox. As soon as you touch the gearstick to change gear, the clutch disengages without the need to press a pedal. If you are unable or unwilling to use a clutch pedal, then this is a novel and ideal solution. The Sportomatic transmission was a rare option which Porsche offered from 1967 to 1978 and very few were sold in the UK. Over the years, many Sportomatics have, sadly, been converted to conventional manual transmission. Whether you have a need for clutchless transmission, are a Porsche collector, or are just looking for something a bit different, then this 911E is worthy of your attention. Interestingly, although the Sportomatic gives a more relaxed drive than a manual, the system was used in the Porsche 911R Sportomatic which ran to victory in the Marathan da la Route (84 Hours of Nurburgring) in 1967 as Porsche correctly believed that it would stop tired drivers from mis-shifting gears and help clutch wear.
