Details

The Volkswagen (Type 2) T3 Transporter, also known as T25 in the UK, was introduced in 1979. The T3 Transporter was one of the last all-new bodied Volkswagen platforms that still used an air-cooledrear-engine design. Compared to it's predecessor, the T3 was sturdier and heavier, with a slightly larger, much more square and boxy body, that offered more usable interior space than the original models' rounded front side, roof, and edges. The T3, with its front now folding sharply along a horizontal middle axis, instead of the old model's curve, is sometimes called "the wedge" by enthusiasts, to differentiate it from earlier VW "Kombis".

In 1980 Devon introduced the T25 / T3 Volkswagen Devon Moonraker (similar interior design and layout to the earlier Type 2 Bay window Devon Moonraker). It had a side elevating “Double Top” pop top roof initially. On later models it was also possible to specify soft sided “Aerospace” elevating roof, solid sided “Spacetop” elevating roof or a “Hi Top” high top fixed roof option. The interior had cupboards along the side behind the drivers seat and the rear seat converted into a 3/4 width double bed. The engine options for the earlier versions used either the 1600 cc or the 2000 cc CU air cooled engines. The four cylinder air cooled 1970cc petrol engine with twin down draft carburetors develops 70bhp at 4200rpm and 137Nm of torque at 3000rpm.

This outstanding VW T25 is a Devon Moonraker conversion from new and has remained completely original for it's whole life to date.  It is finished in the Devon factory paintwork colour scheme of duo tone Brilliant Orange and Ivory with a brown cloth patterned interior and coffee and cream cabinets. It has the following specification:

  • Cab heater

  • Cruise control

  • Electric mains hook up

  • Bottled gas supply

  • ZIG C.F.8 power supply and remote charging

  • Sophisticated electrical control system

It has covered just 20k miles from new and is totally original down to the original dealer fitted number plates and Blaupunkt Toronto stereo. It wears it's original paint throughout (confirmed by paint depth guage) and has never been welded or touched up/re-painted anywhere having benefitted from being Ziebart treated from new. There are a couple of minor marks to the paint but nothing that warrants attention - it even has it's original factory tyre pressure stickers above each wheel, original VW tool kit and all engine bay stickers etc. The original tyres are being sold with the van but new ones were fitted a few years ago to ensure safety on the road. The only deviation from original is the sympathetic fitment of rear inertia reel seat belts.

It was supplied new on 14th March 1980 by William Arnold Caravans of Manchester.  The history file consists of all the Volkswagen handbooks, guides and leaflets in the William Arnold plastic wallet, along with the period sales brochure and instruction manuals for the camping equipment. A large collection of MOT test certificates and servicing invoices help to confirm the total mileage of just 20,645 miles.
